Best Beaches Near Praia da Luz

Once a quaint fishing village, Praia da Luz has blossomed into a sought-after Algarve holiday destination – and it’s easy to see why. Situated just 6 kilometres to the west of Lagos, this charming coastal town is celebrated for its proximity to an array of stunning beaches. With their sun-kissed golden sands, crystal-clear waters, awe-inspiring rock formations, and an invitingly laid-back ambiance, these coastal gems have magnetised beach enthusiasts in search of the ultimate sun-soaked Portugal getaway. In this blog, we’ll be your guide to the best beaches near Praia da Luz, ensuring your beach days are filled with relaxation, fun, and natural beauty.

Praia da Luz Beach

Let’s begin with the star of the show, Praia da Luz beach. This beautiful crescent-shaped stretch of golden sand, which has received the coveted ‘European blue flag’, is the heart of the village and offers something for everyone. Whether you’re into swimming, building sandcastles, or just soaking up the sun, this beach has you covered. The calm, gentle waters make it ideal for families, and the nearby beachfront promenade is lined with cafes and restaurants, perfect for a leisurely meal with a view, as well as two watersport centres for the thrill-seekers. At the far end of the beach sits the famous Black Rock, formed approximately 150 million years ago by volcanic lava from the Monchique mountains.

Porto de Mós Beach

For those seeking a more expansive and secluded beach experience, Porto de Mós Beach is the answer. Just a short drive from Praia da Luz, this beach boasts a longer shoreline, surrounded by towering cliffs that add an extra layer of dramatic beauty. The beach is also known for its excellent water quality and is a favourite spot for sunbathing, swimming, and beach sports. There are even restaurants nearby where you can savour fresh seafood and Portuguese cuisine. With lifeguards on duty from easter to the end of summer, this is a great family beach in peak season. However, unlike the sheltered coves which are tucked away behind Ponta da Piedade, the beach at Porto de Mós faces into the full power of the Atlantic ocean, which often makes for good surfing but it can also feel a little breezy at times.

Burgau Beach

A short drive west from Praia da Luz, roughly halfway between Sagres and Lagos, brings you to Burgau Beach, a hidden gem with a cosy, traditional fishing village feel. This beach is perfect for those who prefer a quieter atmosphere and a glimpse of local life. The sandy cove is flanked by cliffs, providing both shade and stunning scenery. Take a leisurely walk through the village’s narrow streets, and don’t forget to try the local seafood at one of the charming seaside restaurants.

This small but incredibly scenic beach is accessed via a wooden staircase, adding an element of adventure to your visit. Once you descend, you’ll be greeted by a pretty cove with crystal-clear waters, intriguing rock formations, and a sense of isolation that makes it a perfect escape.
